When you find yourself on the go constantly for sports, bringing some staples along with you can make a big difference and keep your energy levels up! Or stop in at the grocery store and pick up foods when you arrive at your destination. Here are some of our favorite, portable picks to take with you or pick-up when you arrive for your next sports road trip.
Sunflower seeds are powerful and deliver important nutrients including healthy fats, protein, and fiber. They are great to crunch on while you are traveling. One serving of shelled sunflower seeds (1/4 cup) delivers about 14 grams of healthy fat AND 6 grams of protein.
Check out savory flavors of sunflower seeds like barbecue, the added salt can be beneficial for athletes because you lose a lot of salt when you sweat. Plus salt can help your body retain the fluid that you are taking in and maintain fluid levels.
Single serving pouches of applesauce are perfect for on the go athletes. Applesauce delivers a boost of easily digested carbohydrates, which provide energy for quick movement in sports - like sprinting.
Applesauce pouches help to squeeze in additional servings of fruit while on the go. Watch out for varieties that have added sugar, stick with brands like GoGo Squeez that are just fruit puree.
A nutrition highlight is that each Gogo Squeez pouch has 70 calories AND 3 grams of fiber.
Nut Butter + Banana
Sports dietitian, Molly Morgan, works in nut butter and banana to nearly every meal plan she writes for an athlete. She explains why, “the combination of healthy fats and protein from the nut butter with the easy on the stomach carbohydrates from banana make it perfect for athletes - plus it can be a really portable snack which is an added bonus.”
Plus bananas are loaded with potassium (480 milligrams per large banana), which aids in muscle contraction.
Look for single serving pouches or packs of nut butters like: Justins, RX Nut Butters, Jif Natural peanut butter cups (pictured here), or similar.
Fuel for Fire
Smoothies are a great way to fuel and refuel the body but when you are on the go, it can be hard to stick to your usual smoothie routine. Bringing your own smoothie is best because many smoothies at restaurants tend to be loaded with syrups and sugar and will not deliver the type of energy athletes need.
The best part of Fuel for Fire is that they are a blend of fruit or vegetables, plus protein. For another bonus, Fuel for Fire pouches do not have to be refrigerated, which makes them very travel friendly. Our favorite flavors are Tropical and Strawberry Banana.
